France. Order of the Legion of Honour. Model VII of the Third Republic. Knights Class. Extremely Fine. Approximately 71 mm x 39.8 mm, including the jump ring. Approximately 135 mm in height including the full extended ribbon. A handsome specimen of this highest order of France, this being the smallest class. It was awarded to Frederick Ward Putnam in 1896 for his contributions to archaeology. The original box of issue is included, with his name inked inside, along with the date, January 1896. The leather-clad case is ornamented around the lid in gilt, with a large gilt R.F. at center. Not a rare distinction but a bit unusual with the original case and certain provenance. The Legion of Honour is an order established by Napoleon in May 1802.
