1789 (1883) George Washington of Virginia Medal. Restrike by George Massamore. Musante GW-352R, Baker-64A. Silver. MS-64 (PCGS).34 mm. Warm steel-gray patina is a bit bolder on the reverse, both sides with lighter antique silver undertones evident as the surfaces dip into a light. Traces of prooflike finish in the fields, particularly on the obverse. A rare medal that was struck on the order of coin dealer George Massamore, on January 11, 1883. Just 21 examples were produced in each of three compositions, silver, brass and copper, with a lone one struck in gold for T. Harrison Garrett. Beyond the Garrett specimen, silver examples are naturally the most desired and rarely offered. This is a particularly attractive example, quite rare, of distinctive design, and sure to meet with enthusiasm when offered.
