CONSTANTINE I, A.D. 307-337. AV Aureus (5.28 gms), Nicomedia Mint, A.D. 315. NGC Ch AU, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5. Ex Jewelry. cf. RIC-1 (shield legend); cf. Calico-5196 (same). Obverse: CONSTANTINVS P F AVG, laureate head right; Reverse: VOTIS V MVLTIS X, Victory standing right, holding shield inscribed VOT / X / MVL / XX in four lines and set upon cippus; SMN. Despite displaying some edge marks from its time in jewelry, this VERY RARE specimen features a hybrid between its legends in the reverse peripheries and on the shield. While the normally expected legend on the shield would read VI / CTO / RIA / AVG, this lays forth the current vows, while pointing toward those in the past around the margins. A great and fairly unusual variety. Ex: Stacks (1/2010) Lot # 405.
