1652 Pine Tree Shilling. Large Planchet. Noe-2, Salmon 2-C, W-700. Rarity-4. Without Pellets at Trunk. Fine Details--Scratch (PCGS). 64.2 grains. A very appealing Noe-2 shilling despite the noted qualifier. A few ancient pinscratches are visible at the base of the tree and the lower reverse border, but these fail to distract the eye. A pair of circular marks in the same region are fully integrated into the complexion and a subtle creases in the planchet run diagonally across either side. The surfaces are otherwise glossy and smooth, with a blended patina of dove-grey and steel-blue shades. Bold at the centers despite obscured details near the edge. This piece conveniently aligns with the old anecdote that they were used as "witch pieces" during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692-1693. Lore suggests that carrying a bent silver coin was a protection against witches, and the easiest way to bend them was to bite down on one half of the coin while the other half was tugged downward.
