Interpretation of "Ye Olde Mint" engraved on the reverse of a 1992 silver eagle. By Ron Landis. Host coin Mint State. Presumably created to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the US Mint, the reverse of the silver eagle has been replaced by an elaborate depiction of the Mint building based on the famous painting "Ye Olde Mint" by Edwin Lamasure, Jr. The inscription UNITED STATES MINT is above, and below, in cursive, the inscription ACT OF APRIL 2 / 1792. The face of the sun on the obverse carries the number of the engraving, the artists initials and the date of engraving: 046 / RL / 94. Lightly toned in golden iridescence with wispy hairlines from a cleaning, almost certainly as made during the engraving process. Engraver Ron Landis is well known in the collecting community for his scholarship on early minting techniques, as well as his work with the Gallery Mint. This piece of art by Landis is an impressive creation that would do nicely in a collection of engraved coins, and also as a go with for the collector specializing in the early United States Mint. From the Collection of Leonard Augsburger, co-author of The Secret History of the First U.S. Mint.
