1892 United States Assay Commission Medal. Silver. 33 mm. By George T. Morgan. JK AC-36a. Rarity-5. Unc Details--Cleaned (NGC). The Mint delivered at least 25 silver impressions from these dies in 1892 to fill the medal cases that it purchased on February 8 of that year. The dies were put to use in later years, accounting for at least one silver restrike in 1906. Interestingly, most silver strikings of this type that we have handled in recent years have been impaired due to light wear or cleaning. The only exception is the Mint State specimen from the Collection of Charles E. Barber that sold as lot 4845 in our (Stacks) January 2010 New York Americana Sale. From the Richard Jewell Collection. Earlier from Presidential Coin & Antique Co., Inc.s sale of the Benj Fauver Collections, July 2006, lot 310. Lot tag included.
