This issue is the only one in the Assay Commission medal series that honors a recently deceased president. James A. Garfield, whose portrait appears on the obverse, was assassinated in 1881. The reverse exhibits kneeling Juno Moneta instructing Putto in coin weighing with the inscription LIBRA PROBAT OPUS, "Weight Proves the Work." This design, which was used on several other Assay Commission medals of the era, was later adapted for the Manila Mint Opening Wilson dollar of 1920. From the Richard Jewell Collection.
