1883 Evacuation of New York medal. Musante GW-1002, Baker-459. Copper. SP-65 RD (PCGS).44.8 mm. A beautiful specimen of this medal, notable for the unusually high relief of Washington’s bust. The surfaces retain most of their original light rosy orange brilliance with just a trace of deeper red and violet accenting the middle obverse fields and the bust. The reverse is essentially full red. Strong mirrors and visually striking. Close inspection reveals that the portrait was not finely finished. It looks to be tooled, but these marks were clearly in the die as they are repeated on the other specimens in this collection, both in copper and white metal. Struck on a thick flan, 5.5 mm at the rims, and most impressive.Ex William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
