Cumberland, Maryland. Good Intent Stage Co. 1841. 25 Cents. PCGS Currency Very Fine 20 Apparent. Minor Stains.(MD-KSG-5.84.5 / Jones-Littlefield PW40-21) Draper, Toppan & Co. Phil. & New York. Left end panel with 25 in die counter at top, cents in box below and primitive steam locomotive pulling coach car in oval frame at bottom. Reverse of period Seated Quarter upper left of center. Washington on horseback with men moving cannon in background in upper right. Right end panel with steamboat in oval frame at top, cents in box below and 25 in die counter at bottom. An extremely rare scrip piece from this issuer. This example is far superior than the other two notes we have seen from this stage coach company. This note was "receivable for Stage Fare, or payable in current Bank Notes at out Office." Jones-Littlefield lists this note in their encyclopedic reference on Virginia obsoletes and scrip as Wheeling was in Virginia before breaking off as part of West Virginia in 1863. It has a rarity rating of 7H in the Virginia reference indicating 2 to 4 known. Even circulation is seen. The "minor stains" mentioned by the grading service are trivial and really of no concern.
