1839 Adam Eckfeldt Retirement Medal. Silver. 52 mm. Julian MT-18. Mint State, Polished.A sharply defined and relatively appealing example of this elusive type. A short scratch at the lower obverse border is noted, while scattered hairlines and a curiously bright silver white appearance point to a cleaning. We know of only a few other examples of this historic Mint medal in silver; it appears it was never restruck for public consumption in this metallic composition. The Ford collection included two, along with the note that this issue is "very rare: there may only be five to ten of these." Eckfeldt himself received a gold strike from these dies. This lot includes what appears to be the original red and golden leather flip case for this medal, the interior plush blue with golden lining. The case is in Very Fine condition, fully functional yet with the edge slightly tattered and minor handling marks on both the top and bottom. Rare. (Total: 2 items)
