DENMARK. Admiral Niels Juels Victory over the Swedes at Oland Silver Medal, 1677. Christian V (1670-99). NGC MS-61.69 mm. Galster-216; Van Loon III, P. 197. Half-length military portrait of Niels Juel, facing right, holding a baton in his right hand. Behind him the barrels of two cannon, while in the distance a sea battle rages. Inscription: "DN.NICOL.IVEL.EQ.R.D.ARCHITHAL" above; Reverse: Inscription: "PRAELIVM INTER CLASSES CHRIST.V. / ET.CAR.XI.I.IVL.MDCLXXVII. / DN.NICOL.IVEL.ET.HENR.HORN.DVC." The medal commemorates a naval battle which took place on June 1, 1676 - despite the medal asserting that it occurred on July 1, 1677. It is interesting to note that a much larger 49 ounce medal was produced for this battle by the same engraver, which still ranks as one of the largest medals ever struck. This is an exquisite example of a VERY RARE medal with a fuchsia-toned obverse and a gold and blue infused reverse. A hinged leather, satin, and velour presentation case, not original to this medal, accompanies this lot. From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II.
