Buffalo, New York. $50 1882 Date Back. Friedberg 559 (W-2871). The Columbia NB. Charter #4741. PCGS Currency About New 50. $50/$100 Double Denomination Error.Offered is an incredible $50/$100 Double Denomination error that is the only such error known for the Second Charter series. This is the first note of a $50/$100, $100/$50 pair offered this evening. The pair are sheet mates, both traced back to the monumental Grinnell Collection sale. The Columbia National Bank of Buffalo issued 8,494 $50-$100 sheets. This Double Denomination error occurred when the sheet became inverted after its first printing. As a result the top note of the sheet ended up with a $50 face and an inverted $100 back while the bottom note of the sheet ended up with a $100 face and an inverted $50 back.

This note offers broad margins and bright paper which displays only light handling. The blue overprint inks are bold with some original embossing seen on the back. The stamped bank officers signatures are slightly faded but still legible. The note has the immediate appearance of a Choice Uncirculated note.

The present note and the $100/$50 example to follow have miraculously managed to stay together for more than 100 years. They have shared a home in legendary collections from Grinnell to Schermerhorn to Bass and now Anderson. It is our hope that though this pair is offered in two separate lots, they both go home with the same fortunate collector once the gavel falls.

PCGS Population: 1, none finer. From Barney Bluestones Albert A. Grinnell Collection sale of November 1944, lot 1738; Robert F. Schermerhorn; Harry Bass Research Foundation; Heritage Auctions sale of February 2005, lot 15483.
