1856 James Buchanan. DeWitt-JB 1856-1. White metal. 61 mm. Uncirculated Details—Damaged (NGC).,A blunt dent in the lower left field has slightly distorted the plane, with a gentle bulge visible on the reverse, this being the damage noted by NGC. Still, the medal is visually appealing. Satiny and lustrous light silver gray surfaces are seen on the obverse and the reverse is somewhat more deeply toned. Other small handling marks are scattered about, which is not unusual on a large piece in this soft composition. Dies by Anthony Paquet, who engraved this medal before famously joining the staff at the United States Mint. Large, distinctive in style, nicely accomplished, and rare. Though not official, these were struck in celebration of Buchanans inauguration, not leading up to the election. The Ford Collection included a gilt white metal piece graded MS-63 by NGC, which brought just shy of $5,000 in September 2013 accenting to the importance of this impressive medal.,From the Brian Dobbins Collection of American Political Tokens.
