California--San Francisco. Undated (Circa 1858-1860) Wm. Kelly. Miller-Calif 7. Lead. 29 mm. AU-55 (NGC).,Warm lead-gray surfaces with hints of lilac. Crudely struck on an imperfectly round planchet. Both obverse and reverse have central motifs in the style of Liberty Head $10 gold pieces of the mid-19th century. Probably unique. Rulau never saw this piece, relying on the listing in Charles Kappens California Tokens. In truth, there are probably very few (if any) living token enthusiasts who have ever seen this extremely rare pre-Civil War California token. A landmark offering. From our sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XXIII, August 2013, lot 22408. Lot tag and collector envelope with attribution notation included.
