1787 Fugio Copper. Pointed Rays. Newman 8-X, W-6750. Rarity-3. STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils--Struck Off Center with Obverse and Reverse Laminations--VF Details--Scratches (NGC).;A fascinating piece unfortunately marred by a poor quality planchet. This piece is double struck, which feature is best appreciated on the reverse in the area of the inscription WE ARE ONE. The obverse does not display any evidence of double striking but, on the contrary, exhibits a row of incuse denticles from the lower border just past 6 oclock that suggests that another planchet or coin was in contact with that side of the coin during one of the impressions. Prominent planchet fissures are noted through the central obverse and along the upper left reverse border, with more minor flaws also scattered about. Most areas exhibit pleasing light brown patina, the design interrupted by the flan flaws and other striking anomalies, but the basic design appreciable. Worthy of additional study, the NGC attribution of an off-center strike does not seem to correspond to what is evident on this piece.;
