1787 Fugio Copper. Pointed Rays. Newman 12-X, W-6820. Rarity-3. STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils. MS-63+ BN (PCGS).;138.1 grains. This is an outstanding Choice example, the surfaces glossy in texture with rich copper brown patina. Faint remnants of pinkish-rose luster are evident around the rings that line the upper reverse border -- highly appealing. Boldly defined from an ideally centered strike, minor planchet roughness and a few faint drift marks in isolated areas hardly seem to preclude a near-Gem rating. One of the more plentiful varieties of the type, Newman 12-X had an extant population of 264 examples in the Bank of New York hoard as of 1948. This is one of the finer specimen we have handled, both the striking quality and surface preservation superior.;From the Dr. Gordon Shaw Collection.
