1866 Major General George G. Meade Union League Medal. Bronze. 79 mm. By Anthony C. Paquet. Julian PE-20. Choice Mint State.;Highly regarded by collectors because of its rarity and impressive appearance, this type is also regarded as one of the finest designs produced by Paquet. The strategy of General Meade, or Old Snapping Turtle as he was known to his troops, is regarded as the major factor in the Union victory at the Battle of Gettysburg, the turning point in the War Between the States. According to Julian, in addition to the single gold medal, only 100 additional bronze specimens were struck. This example is completely free of edge problems and there are no ticks or scratches in the fields or on the design. There is very slight evidence of an ancient polishing with a soft cloth, although this is easily overlooked. A very bold strike enhances the exquisite detail of this impressive medal.;
