1892 Morgan Silver Dollar. Proof-66 (PCGS). CAC.;This lovely Gem exhibits iridescent blue, pink and apricot undertones to mottled obverse toning in olive-copper. For the reverse a pinkish-silver center framed in warmer copper-gray peripheral toning. Highly reflective in the fields with generally sharp devices, softness of detail to the central obverse high point is a characteristic of this issue. A mintage of 1,245 pieces is unusually generous by Proof Morgan dollar standards and can be explained by the Mints anticipation of heightened demand for silver Proof sets due to the debut of the Barber dime, quarter and half dollar in 1892. Writing in the 1993 reference Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States, A Complete Encyclopedia, Q. David Bowers opines that several hundred unwanted Proof 1892 dollars were spent for face value. Not only did the present Gem survive, but it did so with exceptionally smooth and attractive surfaces. This gorgeous coin will be ideal for inclusion in another important numismatic cabinet.;From our (Stacks) 85th Annual ANA Convention Sale, August 1976, part of lot 731.
