1872 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. Proof-66 (PCGS).;This is an incredible coin -- destined perhaps as a blue ribbon winner in the PCGS Registry Set competition or simply to bring the pleasure of ownership to the successful bidder. It is exceptionally well preserved and combines a golden-copper obverse with an equally original sandy-gray reverse. Both sides also reveal very attractive iridescent blue and pink undertones. A nicely mirrored finish and a full strike will impress even the most discerning numismatist. From a mintage of 950 Proofs, many of which may have been melted in the Mint after the Act of February 12, 1873, abolished the standard silver dollar. The typical survivor grades no finer than Proof-64, confirming the desirability of this upper end Gem.;From our (Stacks) sale of the John Work Garrett Collection for The Johns Hopkins University, March 1976, part of lot 306; our (Stacks) session of Auction 81, July 1981, part of lot 1674.
