1904-S Morgan Silver Dollar. MS-65 PL (NGC). CAC. OH.;A remarkably well preserved survivor of this conditionally challenging, key date issue from the later Morgan dollar series. Boldly impressed with a light satin texture, the devices offer appreciable contrast with modestly reflective fields. Peripherally toned in iridescent gold, cobalt blue and copper-apricot, especially on the reverse, the centers are bright and brilliant. The 1904-S is one of the most elusive Morgan dollars in all grades, much of the mintage of 2,304,000 pieces likely being destroyed through melting pursuant to the terms of the 1918 Pittman Act. Release of coins from federal storage was limited and came to an end during the 1950s, there being none in the Treasury Department releases of 1962 to 1964. With survivors particularly rare at both the Gem level of preservation and with wholly prooflike surfaces, this is an especially significant piece that combines both of these desirable attributes. A coin that belongs in the finest set of prooflike Morgan dollars.
