1652 Pine Tree Shilling. Large Planchet. Noe-6, Salmon 5-Di, W-720. Rarity-6-. Without Pellets at Trunk, Reversed Ns. EF Details--Environmental Damage (PCGS).66.1 grains. Deep steely-charcoal color dominates the in hand appearance, the surfaces with roughness and pitting to explain the PCGS qualifier. Both sides are also glossy in texture, the result of a cleaning to lessen the effects of environmental damage. On the positive side we note universally sharp detail from a well executed strike, the border only lightly into the peripheral letters at lower right obverse, lower left reverse. Waviness in the planchet is seen toward the lower borders on both sides, but it is minor. This is Noe-6, distinct from the later Noe-6.1, and before the obverse die really start to deteriorate at bottom. Noe-6 in either state was missing in any form in such major offerings as the 1970 MHS sale, Norweb, Reed Hawn, and others. The best may be the example discovered in England and sold in RARCOAs session of Auction 81. The fact that Fred Boyd amassed three specimens of Noe-6 likely kept others of his generation and the one that followed from getting one.PCGS# 914816. BASE PCGS# 45372.
