CHINA. Chinese Soviet Republic. Fantasy "Lenin" Silver Dollar, "1931" (in characters) (ca. 1940s). NGC Unc Details--Cleaned. cf. LM-881 (for prototype); K-B73; KMX-M850; WS-1349-32. A fantasy type struck in loose imitation of the official Soviet issues and featuring a depiction of what is likely Vladimir Lenin opposite a hammer and sickle. RARE in this Mint State level of preservation, with the details of the design crisply rendered and with ample luster remaining through the fields. Some wiping is evident, in accordance with the designation, but is fairly typical for the issue. Interestingly, though long ascribed to Lenin, it should be pointed out that this issue bears only minor resemblance to him. Likely engraved locally by someone with little-to-no knowledge of Lenins features, it is similar to Sun Yat-sens "Mausoleum" Dollar, which similarly bears little resemblance to the intended subject on account of an engraver foreign to the culture that he was depicting. Moreover, given the robust nature of the mustache, the portrait may in fact be somewhat of a composite between Lenin, the follically-challenged former Soviet leader, and the mustachioed countenance of then-Soviet leader, Joseph Stalin.
