(t) CHINA. Fantasy "Chang Tso-lin" Silver 50 Cents, "Year 17 (1928)" (ca. mid-20th Century). PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. cf. L&M-871 (for prototype as a Dollar); cf. K-B65 (for another 50 Cents fantasy but in military attire and with plumed shako); KMX-M560; cf. WS-0111 (for prototype as a Dollar). Seemingly unseen previously in this minor format, save for a single appearance by one other in a 2009 Baldwins auction, this type, which features the bust of the "Mukden Tiger," Chang-Tso lin, perfectly mirrors the Dollar design from 1928. VERY RARE and impressive, with some scattered cleaning marks as noted, but also with some inviting gray toning taking hold as well.Chang Tso-lin (sometimes known as the Mukden Tiger) rose to incredible heights from humble beginnings. Eventually becoming the governor of Fengtien and Generalissimo of the Republics land and naval forces, he was murdered by Japanese militarists in a railcar explosion on 4 June 1928.
