1826-1887 (1908) Algernon Sydney Sullivan Medal. By J. Édouard Roiné, Struck by J.K. Davisons Sons. Miller-20. Bronze. Choice Mint State. Housed in the Original Blue Cloth Book Case.60 mm x 88 mm, plaque; 135 mm x 195 mm, case. The sandblast surfaces of this plaque exhibits bold patina in a blend of deep olive-brown and warmer golden-copper. The case is also very well preserved and free of significant blemishes.
This curious medal was not originally commissioned by the American Numismatic Society, but rather by the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Memorial Fund established by his son and law partner George H. Sullivan. The latter gave the medals in their book cases, along with a small endowment for striking additional examples, to the Society in 1913 so that it could make yearly presentations to five recipients. The award page in the present case describes the purpose of the medal and the intended recipients:
This Medal is Struck in Honor of Algernon Sydney Sullivan as a means of commending and encouraging in men their efforts for the welfare of others and as a means of reminding them by his example that in order to reach the highest achievement in life they must not only develop their powers, but must also maintain and cultivate their love and sympathy for others. It is awarded each year to the five persons who stand highest in their examinations in the City of New York for admission to the Bar of the State of New York.
The ANS never fulfilled its trust, the medals remained unissued and, in 1929, George Sullivan re-established the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Memorial Fund. The medals were forgotten until 40 examples, each in their blue cloth book case as here, were found at the Society and subsequently offered for sale to its members at $75/medal. Most were in bronze, although Scott H. Miller (2015) reports, "...that a small number, possibly five or six, were silver." The original mintage in both compositions is unknown. (Total: 1 medal; 1 case)
