CC-67ct. Continental Currency. May 20, 1777. $6. PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58. Contemporary Counterfeit.No. 22537. Signed by S. Elms and George Welch. Vignette of a beaver gnawing at a tree. Latin motto PERSEVERANDO which Newman translates "Perseverance." Printed by Hall and Sellers 1777. This is generally referred to as "The First United States issue." The counterfeit diagnostic is that the "V" in "Value" is higher than the other letters. These contemporary counterfeits tend to sell almost as much as do the genuine notes. This is a lovely piece bound to please the specialist.
