Undated (post-1864) United States Arsenal, With Sun / Liberty Cap Muling. Dies by John Adams Bolen. Musante JAB M/E-8. White Metal. AU-55 (NGC).27.9 mm. Medium to deep gray with some lighter outlines around the arsenal motif, sun, and inside the reverse rim. A couple of pested areas on the reverse are noted. A very rare issue in any metal and remarkably one of two impressions in this sale, the other being copper. Struck by Dr. Frank Smith Edwards, probably in early 1865, as the first known offering from these dies appeared in an October 1865 sale. A white metal one (tin) was in Frossards January 1891 sale. We have only two examples in our archives, both in copper. This is conceivably unique in this composition. From the Claremont Collection.
