Undated (post-1862) United States Arsenal, Without Sun / Bolen Store Card Muling. Dies by John Adams Bolen. Musante JAB M/E-5, Fuld-760A-3b. Brass. MS-64 (NGC).27.9 mm. Lovely light golden-brass with handsome pastel accents of rose and green, nicely complementing brilliant golden recesses. Lightly flecked patina and just one small spot at the second A of ARSENAL. Struck from the dies in their later states, which we assign to the shop of Dr. Frank Smith Edwards, as discussed in more detail in the description of the copper example in the previous lot. A rarity, as is any from these dies in any composition. We have only two brass examples in our archives, including the last offering of this, from 2017. This is the higher graded of the two. The other was an earlier state medal, perhaps by Mason. We find none in the Heritage archives despite Woodwards note in 1862 that six were struck. From the Claremont Collection. Earlier ex Presidential Coin & Antique Co., Inc.; Stephen L. Tanenbaum; our sale of the Q. David Bowers Collection, June 2017 Baltimore Auction, lot 9091.
