(t) CHINA. Gold Kuping Tael Pattern, CD (1906). Tientsin Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS SPECIMEN-62.

Type with large cloud/plain edge. An EXCEEDINGLY RARE and tremendous important offering from the waning years of Ching-dominated China, this nearly-Choice representative offers an abundance of glistening brilliance across its sharply struck and well incised surfaces. Some golden-orange hues abound throughout, furthering capturing the gaze and captivating the imagination of all who gaze upon it. A colossal offering and opportunity for the most advanced collectors of the series, or world gold stunners more broadly.

This large gold issue was created in 1906 by the Ministry of Revenue at the Tientsin Mint during the 32nd year of the reign of Kuang-hsu. Struck in 98% pure gold and on an experimental basis, these pattern-only issues made their way into full production. The plans to issue gold coinage in units of one Tael for circulation never materialized, however, due to Chinas lack of gold reserves along with their de facto adoption of the silver standard, meaning that these specimens were never released into circulation.Ex: Anderson Collection.
