GREAT BRITAIN. Admiral Rodney/Active, Brave, Victorious Pewter/White Metal Medal, ND (1780). PCGS Genuine--Exc. Corrosion, VF Details.Liechty-05; BHM-226; MH-379. Diameter: 27mm. Obverse: Uniformed bust of Rodney facing right; perimeter legend to left and right reading ADMIRAL RODNEY; Reverse: Inner ring with twelve rays radiating outward toward the rim. Within the ring, a four-line legend ACTIVE / BRAVE / VICTORI / OUS. The Milford Haven Plate medal. Despite the noted corrosion, the design elements are bold and the legends largely legible, with some weakness noted on the obverse legend and first line of the reverse. However, this is an tremendously desirable medal of EXTREME RARITY (R-8 [unique or nearly unique] in Leichty) with a superb provenance.Another medal issued following Rodneys re-supply mission to Gibraltar. Rodney set sail with a fleet 20 ships of the line. En route, his fleet encountered and captured a Spanish fleet off Cape Finisterre (on the northwest coast of Spain). Continuing to sail southward along the coast of Portugal, Rodney encountered Almirante Don Juan de Lángaras squadron south of Cape St. Vincent a mere eight days later. A brief, but fierce, nighttime engagement ensued in which Admiral Lángara was captured. Flush with two naval victories in quick succession, Rodney then proceeded to complete his re-supply mission to nearby Gibraltar. Rodney was nominated as a supernumerary Knight of the Order of Bath on October 14, 1780 in recognition of his defeat and capture of Lángara. He became a full constituent member the following February. To view all items from the Skyler Liechty Collection, click here. From the Skyler Liechty Collection.Ex: John W.
