Obverse: Uniformed bust of Rodney facing three-quarters right, perimeter legend ST. GEORGE BRIDG.S RODNEY ADMIRAL OF YE WHITE; Reverse: Two ships in battle scene within inner rope border; anepigraphic. This medal offers lustrous chocolate surfaces with scattered highlights of rouge and gold. Well-struck with only traces of wear; a desirable RARITY (R-7 [4-12 known examples] in Liechty) despite the piercing for a suspension loop. The offered example is the plate medal in Liechty.Rodney was appointed a Rear Admiral in 1771; in February 1778 he was promoted to Admiral of the White. The British Navy was organized into squadrons under the colors red, white, and blue in that order of seniority, with an admiral assigned to each. In Rodneys day, there was no Admiral of the Red, so Rodneys position as Admiral of the White placed him just below the top-ranked Admiral of the Fleet. To view all items from the Skyler Liechty Collection, click here. From the Skyler Liechty Collection.
