PERU, Lima, gold cob 8 escudos, 1716 M, legend HISPANIA, NGC MS 65, finest known in NGC census. S-L28; KM-38.2; Cal-2126; Fr-7. 26.81 grams. The Lima 8 escudos of 1716 are unique for having rows of dots for the horizontal lines on the pillars side, but it is also the first date to show dots and teardrops as ornaments around the cross, believed to be a memorial for earthquakes that struck Peru in February of that year. In addition, this date is the first to show dots in the spaces around the elements of the pillars design, with over a half dozen varieties known so far. For all the varieties, this example is far and away the finest known, the next highest-graded being a pair of MS 61s in the NGC census. Luster and sharpness are everywhere, and the strike is devoid of any but trivial doubling, the cross-lions-castles beautifully centered (pillars side slightly off-center), with minimal legends.
