1837 Martin Van Buren Indian Peace Medal. Bronze. First Size. Second Reverse. Julian IP-17, Prucha-44. MS-65 BN (NGC). 75.7 mm. 3783.0 grains. Rich chocolate brown with faint traces of iridescence in places and a curious outline of darker toning around much of the portrait, but on the bust, rather than in the adjacent field. Gently prooflike in the fields and exhibiting almost no signs of handling. A really pretty example of this largest format Van Buren. Of all the bronze first-size Van Buren medals in our online archives, only one seems to have been struck from the original reverse die. Those from the second, post-1846 die, as offered here, were clearly the lions share of the production. From the Ronald A. Slovick Family Collection. Earlier from Presidential Coin and Antique, June 1982.
