Matched Two-Piece Set of "1970" (1971) Stone Mountain Memorial Completion Medals. Philadelphia Mint. By Abram Belskie. Silver. No. 289. (NGC). Both examples are individually graded and encapsulated. Included are: First Size, Swoger-49Aa, MS-64, 76 mm, 4,211.8 grains; and Second Size, Swoger-49Ba, MS-65, 39 mm, 565.5 grains. Both exhibit a handsome antiqued pewter-gray finish with speckled russet toning. Although the initial examples of this type were struck by Medallic Art Co. in 1969, only the Philadelphia Mint pieces struck in 1971 are government authorized and, per Swoger (2008), qualify as National Commemorative medals. These are identified by a P mintmark on the reverse within the bottom of the wreath, as seen on both the offered examples. Scarce as an original matched set, and a find for the specialist. (Total: 2 medals)
