1869 Pacific Railway Completion Medal. By William Barber. Awarded to Joshua Rufus Nichols. HK-12a, Julian CM-39. Rarity-6. Silver. Specimen-64 (PCGS). 45 mm. This lovely near-Gem is vividly toned in steel-blue, pinkish-rose and champagne-gold iridescence that assumes a more colorful appearance when the medal dips into a light. Both sides are fully impressed with reflective fields supporting frosty design elements. Struck in the Philadelphia Mint from dies prepared by Chief Engraver William Barber, medals of this type commemorate completion of the first transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, in a ceremony in Provo, Utah. The mintage in silver is just 126 pieces, high quality examples such as this particularly appealing to both so-called dollar specialists and U.S. Mint medal collectors. The present example is an important survivor that ranks as the sole finest graded by PCGS. This represents its first public offering and it will surely generate tremendous excitement among bidders. This specimen was awarded to Joshua Rufus Nichols, a pivotal figure in the development of the American railway system in the mid-to-late 19th century. Born in 1831 in Upstate New York, Nichols worked at the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad in Chicago from 1854 until 1869, when he then began working as the Assistant Superintendent of the Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, Nebraska. It was presumably during his time with the Union Pacific Railroad that he was awarded this historic medal. It was obviously well cherished and cared for and it is among the very finest known survivors. This lot includes the original leather slipcase and box for the medal, the outside of both with the name J.R. NICHOLS. printed in gold lettering. Both are fully functional, although the slipcase is a bit tattered around its edges, the lid and base also a bit loose at their fittings. (Total: 1 medal; 1 slipcase and box combination). PCGS# 642038 PCGS Population: 1; none finer. Ex Joshua Rufus Nichols. Never before offered publicly.
