Exeter, New Hampshire. Ephraim Fellowes (Fogg & Fellowes). 1862. 10 Cents. PCGS Banknote Very Fine 20. (Lafond 550-00.10-1., Rarity-7). An extreme rarity from Exeter, New Hampshire. It is a great departure from the majority of that states scrip. The size is not diminutive, but full banknote-size. It is also printed in two colors: red on the face and green on the back. Last year Kevin Lafond published his opus on the private notes of the Granite State and these enigmatic issues were brought to life for other collectors. Without the help of any book, this notes rarity is apparent. The illustrated example in the book is the Schingoethe-Finn example that sold in the first numbered Schingoethe sale in October 2004 for $488.75. The all red face has titles, texts, obligation and a small apothecary emblem at the base. Signed by Ephraim Fellowes. The green back is intricate with an Exeter street scene with buildings at the center. Flanking are advertising texts for Fogg & Fellowes at the left and Goodwin at the right describing their businesses and products. Excellent paper body for its wear and sharp colors. PCGS Banknote cites "Small paper scuff, minor stains." The faults are academic. Kevin cites two known of this type. At worst this is the third 10 Cents. A fascinating piece.
