1902 Scovill Manufacturing Company Centennial Medal. Bronze. Presented to Charles E. Barber. MS-67 BN (NGC).76 mm. Obv: Medallic busts of founders J.M.L. and William H. Scovill. Rev: Names of four predecessor firms that eventually joined the Waterbury, Connecticut Scovill Brass empire, insert die presentation to C.E. BARBER. A satiny and smooth autumn-brown example that is very close to perfection. Scovill was the maker of innumerable merchants, Hard Times and Civil War tokens, as well as encased postage and political medalets for use throughout the United States. The Waterbury firm also struck circulating coins for such countries as Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Serbia, and produced nickel blanks by the millions for the Philadelphia Mint. This particular example of the firms Centennial medal, presented to Charles E. Barber, also holds tremendous appeal for collectors specializing in the works of this U.S. Mint chief engraver. From the Larry Baber Collection.
