1883 Maris Family Bicentennial. Julian CM-27. Bronze. Mint State.38 mm. This boldly toned example exhibits a dominant blend of antique-copper and steel-brown patina, the obverse with exceptional multicolored undertones flashing into view as the surface dips into a light. Sharply struck, well preserved and nearly in the Choice category, this is a beautiful specimen worthy of a premium bid. Medals of this type, commissioned by Dr. Edward Maris, were struck in the United States Mint to the extent of two gold and one aluminum impressions. According to Julian (1977) bronze examples, as here, were struck outside the Mint. This lot includes the medals original circular cardboard box with pink edge. The lid of the box is detached from the base, but the whole is present with the base particularly well preserved. (Total: 1 medal; 1 box)
