Undated Dr. David Hosack Medal. By Moritz Furst. Julian PE-15. Bronze. MS-63 BN (NGC).34 mm. Beautiful mahogany-brown surfaces are satiny to modestly semi-reflective. A trace of friction to the central obverse high point seems to be the only impediment to an even higher numeric grade. Based on offerings in our recent November 2020 Auction, examples of this type are known on both thick and thin planchets; the thickness of the present example is not noted on the NGC insert. Dr. David Hosack, a famed physician and founder of the New-York Historical Society, was also an attendant at the Alexander Hamilton-Aaron Burr duel on July 11, 1804. According to his friend Moritz Furst, Dr. Hosack also collected medals, which has led R.W. Julian (1977) to conclude that "Hosacks friends paid Furst to execute the dies [for this type] while Hosack was still living, possibly in the early 1830s."
