1885 Mint Director James P. Kimball Medal. By Charles E. Barber. Julian MT-8. Bronze. MS-64 BN (NGC).77 mm. A fully struck example with a generally satin finish and dominant deep golden-bronze patina. There is reflectivity in the fields on both sides, as well as splashes of vivid cobalt blue iridescence on the reverse. A beautiful piece that is very close to full Gem quality. In contrast to his predecessor, Henry R. Linderman, Kimball was a do-gooder, against corruption, and under his administration the restriking and making of numismatic delicacies was stopped completely. From the Larry Baber Collection.
