PERU. South Peru (Republic of). Escudo, 1838-CUZ MS. Cuzco Mint. PCGS MS-63+ Gold Shield. Fr-93; KM-174. One-year type. A compelling gold issue that depicts a radiant sunface as the central obverse design with five stars surrounding at top. This example, among the finest that survive, not only impresses with it virtually full, nicely centered strike, but the fields possess captivating prooflike qualities that provide extra flash to the surfaces as well. As a testament to its conditional rarity, this coin currently sits alone as the finest appearing in the PCGS census, while a single MS-64 bests it at NGC. From the Matthew Orsini Collection.
