PERU. South Peru (State of). Independence Medallic 4 Reales, 1836. NGC AU-58. Fonrobert-9227; Zapata-836.02. Obverse: Coat-of-arms motif with radiant sunface at center, four stars above and FEDERACION below; Reverse: 9-line inscription. A VERY SCARCE coin-weighted issue that was obviously treated as such, as most examples seen show significant wear, with some having been holed much like many of the denominated issues that they circulated alongside. Lightly circulated itself, this example retains strong luster in the fields with a wisp of friction over the tops of the designs. Like virtually all examples seen, some softness appears in the centers on the 9-line inscription side, and a small lamination is noted on the suns forehead. After searching, the finest we could find, as well as the single highest graded by either NGC or PCGS. From the Matthew Orsini Collection.
