PERU. Independence Silver Proclamation Medal, 1821. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. Fonrobert-8998. Weight: 9.9 gms. Obverse: Radiant sunface; Reverse: 8-line inscription inside wreath. Struck in celebration of newly found Peruvian independence from Spain, this piece shows soft gray tone in the centers with a touch of orange and blue tone along the outer obverse edges. A SCARCE issue in the quality and the first instance that the unquestionably republican sunface iconography was used in Peruvian numismatics.San Martin (a shortened version of Jose de San Martin), who is mentioned within the reverse inscription of this medal, was an Argentine general who led the independence movement for Argentina, Chile and Peru against Spain. While he participated in many battles, the culmination of them all occurred in 1821 when he sailed with intent to engage the Spanish at their stronghold in Lima. On July 12, 1821, he seized partial control on the city. Independence was officially declared nearly two weeks later on July 28, 1821 and San Martin took the role of Protector of Peru.
