1848 Liberty Seated Half Dime. Large Date. MS-63 (NGC). OH. Deep sapphire-blue and olive-gold toning is marbled across each side, with gleaming satiny luster glowing from underneath. Free of distracting abrasions and particularly pristine on the reverse. A generous mintage of 668,000 pieces conceals the rarity of the 1848 in Mint State, for it was saved in far fewer numbers than many other Philadelphia Mint half dimes from the 1840s. This is a particularly attractive Choice Mint State survivor for the popular Large Date variety, of which only about 40 Uncirculated examples are thoughts to exist.
