1873-S Liberty Seated Half Dime. V-1. MS-67 (PCGS). CAC.With beautiful toning, intensely lustrous surfaces and a virtually pristine appearance, it is little wonder that this coin is one of the two finest 1873-S half dimes known to PCGS. The obverse is adorned with iridescent champagne-apricot, the reverse more boldly toned in mottled steel-blue and reddish-rose. Both sides are fully struck. The Act of February 12, 1873, called the "Crime of 73" by Western silver interests and some later unstudied historians, brought far-reaching changes to the United States monetary system. In addition to adjusting the weight of the dime, quarter and half dollar, the Act introduced the trade dollar and abolished the two-cent piece, silver three-cent piece, half dime and standard silver dollar. The final half dimes produced that year amounted to 600 Proofs and 712,000 circulation strikes from the Philadelphia Mint, as well as an additional 324,000 circulation strikes from the San Francisco Mint. The West Coast issue circulated extensively since silver continued to enjoy strong demand in commercial channels in that part of the country. As a final year issue with a generous mintage, however, enough examples of the 1873-S were set aside to make this one of the more popular type issues in the Liberty Seated series. The Henry Collection specimen is a Condition Census Superb Gem that offers awesome condition rarity and extraordinary eye appeal for the advanced collector. Sure to sell for a strong premium.<p>Close inspection with a loupe reveals minor repunching along the base of the digit 1 in the date. There is also a thin, curved die line within the bottom of Libertys portrait behind the foot. The reverse is rotated a few degrees counterclockwise from normal coin alignment.PCGS# 4405.
