1872-S Liberty Seated Half Dime. Mintmark Above Bow. MS-65 (PCGS). OGH. CAC.Enchanting frosty surfaces exhibit swirling cartwheel visual effects as the coin rotates under a light. Both sides are lightly toned with splashes of iridescent champagne-apricot patina that further enhance already strong eye appeal. Fully struck with solid Gem Mint State quality. The mintage of 837,000 coins reported for the 1872-S half dime includes examples with the mintmark above and below the bow. This issue as a whole is among the more readily obtainable in its series, a fact which makes attractive high grade survivors such as this popular with type collectors.
The Henry Collection specimen is struck from boldly clashed dies, which feature is most pronounced in the obverse field around Libertys portrait and in the central reverse wreath within the shield. Impressions from the letters ME in DIME are evident on the obverse at Libertys left elbow and the end of the pole, traces of the horizontal lines in the shield can be seen on the reverse at the letters HA in HALF.
The old style PCGS holder uses coin #4401, which is now reserved for the Mintmark Below Bow variety of this issue.PCGS# 4402.
