CHINA. Gold Fantasy 25 Tael (Liang), "Year 10 (1871)" (ca. 1919). Uncertain Mint (possibly Shanghai). NGC MS-64. L&M-Unlisted; cf. K-B102 (50 Tael); Fr-Unlisted; KMX-M465. Obverse: Two imperial dragons, with fiery pearl above; Reverse: Sixteen-armed Mahakala seated facing on couch of lotus flowers; around, two imperial dragons, with fiery pearl above; lotus flower below. An incredibly curious and interesting piece, the type bears dates from the reign of Tung-Chih, but style of manufacture would place it much more likely to the period of the early Republic. Quite possibly, the use of these VERY RARE fantasy issues was privately among the merchants of Shanghai, though it is not entirely known. The Patrick H. C. Tan specimen, which sold in 2019 for a hammer of $34,000, and previously hammered at $35,000 in 2011, is a similarly graded example, an NGC MS-63.
