Steel. 5.5 x 2.75 inches. Imprint of Baldwin, Adams and Company, dated 1853. Bright and lustrous medium steel gray with mottled deep olive and violet toning around. A Native American family in a canoe, with the child leaning toward the safety of the mother, who steers the canoe through the waves. The man prepares to spear a shark, as birds fly in nearby. An unusual Native American scene engraved specifically for use by the Metacomet Bank of Fall River, Massachusetts (Haxby MA-588), and appears on several denominations. This was a private vignette and appears only on notes of this bank, the name of which is engraved in the design at the lower left, as printed.Native American Spearing a Fish. Steel. 2 x 3 inches. By Wellstood, Hay and Whiting, though not imprinted. A hunter stands ready to spear a fish in a rushing stream. A lovely light pewter gray plate with some light mottled toning. Minimal handling marks and generally quite attractive. A sharp vignette used on $1 notes of the Redwing Bank, Lawrence, Kansas (Haxby KS-45, G2a), and others. A card sleeve is included.
