PERU. Falsa Época. Sub-Standard Purity Contemporary Counterfeit 4 Escudos, 1762-LM JM. Uncertain Local Mint "Lima"; Assayer JM. Charles III. VERY FINE.13.16 gms. cf.Cal-Type 32 (for basic type); cf.KM-67 (for basic type). Contemporary counterfeit 4 Escudos struck in imitation of a 1762-LM JM Peru 4 Escudos of Charles III. The legends are Obverse: "CAROLUS.III.D.G.HISPAN.ET IND.REX .1762."; Reverse: "NOMINA MAGNA SEQUOR ✿LM✿✿✿JM✿". The style and execution are very crude and quite interesting, a very rare type as a legitimate issue and certainly strongVERY/strong strongRARE/strong even as a contemporary counterfeit. The edge appears to have been applied in small segments of the proper oblique style edge reeding. The legends, though correct, are quite rudimentary done by an inexperience hand. Clearly this piece passed in circulation exhibiting modest even wear displaying light golden patination with lovely sunset hues in the legends. A neat barbarous example certain to add depth to the next collection it enters. From the John Kraljevich Collection of Contemporary Circulating Forgeries.
