Several were gilt at one point with at least one that retains remnants in the protected areas. A perfect assortment for the intermediate to advanced collector looking to add depth and sophistication to their collection.1) Contemporary counterfeit 4 Escudos, ND. cf.Cal-Type 8 (for basic type). 9.45 gms. Struck in copper in imitation of an undated Seville, Spain 4 Escudos of Philip II. Neat and interesting done in good style of an already crude issue.Ex: Aureo & Calico Auction # 255 October 24, 2013 Lot # 359.2) Cast base metal contemporary counterfeit 8 Escudos, 1805-SoFJ. Onza-not listed; cf.Cal-Type 103 (for basic type). 21.87 gms. Cast in imitation of a 1805-SoFJ Chile 8 Escudos of Charles IV with the bust of Charles III. A very interesting issue using the wrong bust type for the date. Very worn and richly toned.3) Contemporary counterfeit 8 Escudos, 1813-P JF. Onza-1531 (obverse die), cf.Cal-Type 21 (for basic type). 10.66 gms. Struck in imitation of a 1813-P JF Popayan, Colombia 8 Escudos of Ferdinand VII. Onza-not listed; cf.Cal-Type 15 (for basic type). 16.98 gms. Struck in imitation of a 1778-Mo FF Mexico 8 Escudos of Charles III. Very clearly an example the saw significant circulation. Thick heavy patina encompasses the vast majority of the surfaces with evidence of light to moderate corrosion throughout. An interesting survivor that spent more than its fair share time in circulation, subsequently escaping the melt by some miracle. Very neat.5) Contemporary counterfeit 8 Escudos, 1776-M FA. Onza-1435; cf.Cal-Type 10 (for basic type). Struck in copper in imitation of a 1776-M PJ 8 Escudos of Charles III. It appears that a couple of areas still retain gilding, otherwise most has worn off showing the original copper core. A neat piece done in fine style that could have easily pass in circulation at the time.
