SPAIN. Falsa Época. Gilt Platinum Contemporary Counterfeit 8 Escudos, 1796-M FA. Uncertain Local Mint "Madrid"; Assayer FA. Charles IV. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.26.92 gms. Onza-1469; cf.Cal-Type 5 (for basic type); cf.KM-437.1 (for basic type). Contemporary counterfeit 8 Escudos with a fantasy date "1796" and assayers letters "FA" struck in imitation of a Spain 8 Escudos of Charles IIII (IV). The legends are Obverse: "CAROL IIII.D.G. HISP.ET IND.R. .1796."; Reverse: "IN.UTROQ.FELIX..AUSPICE.DEO .M..FA.". The style and execution are decent, but with crudely cut letters and date. Somewhat of a weak strike in the centers leaving some visible planchet roughness. Light signs of handling which is not surprising considering the nature of these issues with minor evidence of the Platinum showing through on some of the high points. An attractive and lustrous example with a nice look sure to please. From the John Kraljevich Collection of Contemporary Circulating Forgeries.
